It is an essential component to identifying issues early for timely treatment and protection of your health. We will discuss whether you need a breast and/or pelvic exam, as well as other preventative strategies, such as cervical cancer screenings, certain vaccinations, and other gynecologic concerns like prenatal counseling, contraceptive needs, or menopause expectations.
If indicated, we will perform a breast exam to check for anomalous lumps or suspicious growths; perform a speculum exam to check the cervix for signs of infection, visible abnormalities, pre-cancerous or cancerous changes; and perform a manual inspection of the pelvic organs (vagina, cervix, uterus, and ovaries) to identify potential issues.

A Pap smear and/or HPV testing are performed as part of your routine cervical cancer screenings. An abnormality of your Pap and/or HPV test may require further evaluation or close monitoring by a gynecologist. In some cases, a biopsy of the cervix is needed to determine the best course of action. This is a simple office procedure performed with minimal patient discomfort. If a biopsy is performed, we sometimes diagnose someone with cervical dysplasia, which is a pre-cancerous condition (meaning, not cancer). Depending on the severity of dysplasia present, we counsel you on the best type of treatment (either close follow-up testing or surgical excision) and manage these conditions accordingly.
Pain that is felt in the internal reproductive organs or lower abdominal region. There are a number of possible causes for pelvic pain, which will determine the prescribed treatment for curing or managing the condition. The usual culprits of gynecological pelvic pain in women include: menstrual cramps, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, adenomyosis, uterine fibroids, pregnancy, miscarriage, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
Dyspareunia is the clinical term for painful intercourse, which is characterized as a constant or recurring genital pain that is experienced just before, during, or after sex. We provide compassionate counseling and treatment for this condition, which can be caused by emotional or psychological factors, internal genital trauma (from surgery, injury, or illness), or normal physiologic changes, such as those seen with menopause.
Puberty and adolescence can be a trying and stressful time as a girl leaves childhood behind and embarks on her journey to womanhood. With our experience in compassionate counseling and treatment, we can ease the anxiety for parent and child alike by helping you guide your daughter in her transition to adulthood and providing supportive management for any bothersome symptoms.
In addition to your usual Well Woman preventative cancer screenings, we also provide counseling and if indicated, testing for certain known hereditary cancer genetic abnormalities. The most well-known of these is the BRCA gene mutation, which can have up to a 50-70% chance of ovarian cancer, an 80-90% chance of breast cancer, and other associated types of malignancies. An early diagnosis is helpful for patients to make reproductive choices, employ preventative strategies such as increased frequency of cancer screenings, and/or elect medical or surgical therapies to reduce risks.
